Laminate is a photographic wood look layer over a dense core, sealed under a tough wear layer. It resists scratches well, costs less than many alternatives, and installs quickly as a floating floor.
Where laminate works well
Living rooms, dens, bedrooms, hallways and home offices are good candidates, and it is a popular choice for rental properties. Kitchens can work with products rated for them. Full bathrooms and laundry rooms are better served by luxury vinyl plank, because laminate cores can swell if water sits on the seams.
How we install it
- Remove the existing floor covering when needed, often carpet, and check the subfloor for flatness and moisture.
- Lay the underlayment the manufacturer specifies, including a vapor barrier over concrete when required.
- Set out the rows so cut pieces at walls and doorways are balanced.
- Leave the expansion gap at every wall and fixed object, then cover it with baseboard or quarter round.
Customers often describe replacing carpet in bedrooms with laminate in a single day. Read their accounts on our reviews page.
