Two quotes for the same square footage can be far apart. Usually that is because they include different work. These are the items that move the number most.
Removal of the existing floor
Pulling carpet is quick. Removing a hard floor bonded to a slab is slow, loud and produces heavy debris. Installing vinyl plank over an existing floor, when it is suitable, avoids that cost entirely.
Subfloor preparation
Grinding, filling and leveling to the manufacturer's flatness tolerance can be a significant part of the labor. A quote that skips it is not cheaper; it moves the cost to later repairs.
Product and installation method
Floating floors install faster than glue down floors. Wide planks and patterned layouts take longer than standard planks. Heavier, rigid products need more careful handling.
Stairs
Each stair is cut, fitted and finished individually. A staircase can take as long as a room.
Trim and transitions
Baseboards, quarter round, door undercutting, thresholds at sliders and transitions to other floors all add time and material.
Rooms, furniture and access
Many small rooms take longer than one large room of the same size. Moving furniture, working around appliances, and condominium access rules all affect scheduling.
How to get a quote you can compare
Ask each installer to list removal, preparation, trim and stairs as separate lines. Send photos and approximate square footage through our estimate form and we will tell you what we see.
